Welcome to Choteau, Montana, in 2018. What was once only a small city focused on fossils, has now started to turn into an equestrian mecca. Everyone still knows everyone, so the question remains, what will you become?

Since the freak snowstorm, the sporting goods store was packed. Kristian hadn't seen a day off since the blizzard, and most of those days were from before opening to after closing. He was exhausted most of the time, but he got good overtime, and that meant a little less money from his digital nest eggs. Besides work, it was hard to keep mentally occupied at home. With Embra's help, the cashmere goats stayed outside with the hopes that the freak weather would help improve the downy under hairs that were so highly prized. The rest of the goats stayed inside for milking. And then there was managing the cheese cellar, and well, it was a good thing Ivarr barely left the farm these days. Kristian knew his days at Buck's were numbered, but he wasn't ready to leave quite yet.
Instead, he often turned to thinking about his actual qualifications. Computers and software. He missed the late nights staring at a screen troubleshooting for that one comma that slipped past his notice or problem solving some new task. And technically, he could always go back into that field. It would certainly pay better than retail, and he was more than qualified. But, the temptation was too great. His foray into hacking got him into trouble, and the agreement was that he had to put his illegal activities behind him.
He forced a smile as yet more people came into the store looking for winter boots, winter coats, snow chains, and all sorts of winter gear that had been on sale. "Hi! Welcome to Buck's Sporting Goods! Is there anything I can help you with?" He could address a few people by name, regulars mostly or people he knew from around town. The high school student who worked part time at Rex's Market had a family who was big into canoeing and fishing and always came in for bait. Or the barista who was passionate about bouldering and could talk the ear off anyone who bothered to listen. And so, Kristian noticed when two strangers came in. A man and a woman who clearly didn't look like locals. The other sales assistants were busy helping other people, so Kristian gave his usual forced chipper greeting.
So. Maybe a stronger tent would be ideal. Something to keep them warmer at night until they found a place to stay. They couldn’t keep staying in motels because money was limited. Bonnie walked into the store, Clyde behind her, and nodded in response to the cashier. She flashed him a dazzling smile, one of those infamous Gunner smiles the family was known for. The men in her family could make a nun spread her legs just by flashing that grin. Bonnie used this super power for her benefit as well, at times. Waiting for Clyde to catch up, she slipped her arm around his waist and tucked a hand into his back pocket while leaning into his side. She walked with a limp, favoring her left ankle. She hugged her free arm against her right side, protecting it from bumping into anything so she didn’t tear stitches. Her cheeks were flushed , she was cold but then again - it was snowing outside.
They could probably use chains for the truck, but it wasn’t necessary. They could find something, like a tent that could go over the bed of the truck , so they could sleep in the back up off the ground and out of the snow. That would make sense. Along with an air mattress for the old man’s back. Once they neared the cashier, she greeted him, “Hey! How’s it goin’?” She had a strong, Texas drawl that could easily give away the fact that she wasn’t from here. “We’re lookin’ for a few things. Obviously, do y’all have a truck tent, air mattress — And what this guy wants.” She motioned at Clyde, grinning up at him. Technically, the air mattress was for him.

or a town used to the snow, Clyde found himself pretty taken aback by the locals' unpreparedness for this blizzard. Cars in the ditch, some businesses closed, it looked like Texas with one-inch of ice on the roads. This blizzard must've came out of nowhere, arriving just in time to greet the out-of-state couple who too found themselves unprepared by the drifts of wind-packed snow.
People were rotating in and out of the sporting goods store all packed down with new winter resources as Clyde trailed Bonnie into the front entrance. An arm draped Bonnie's shoulder as she tucked against his side. They moved with a casual pace, given Bonnie's limp. Clyde's wandering gaze followed the sound of a cashier's voice and met eyes, though let Bonnie respond as he continued scanning the passing shelves. He observed employees consulting customers while other shoppers browsed the diminishing winter inventory, all seemingly oblivious to the couple's presence. All except the cashier.
It would be easy to stock up on what they needed, if only Clyde could access his bank account. Only working with what was tucked in his wallet was hardly going to cover what they needed to get by in this cold for very long. They had enough cookware for the time being, decent bedding besides a mattress. Clyde kneaded the scruff of his chin as they approached the employee behind the counter. An isle of camping gear caught Clyde's attention as Bonnie spoke with the cashier, then mentioned him. "Mattress... how long do you think the snow'll last?" Clyde asked, looking to the man. "Might be needing a heater, too." More truth than idea, but the real question was over funds. Unfortunately.
Kristian sized up the couple as they approached. No rings, so probably not married. She certainly had a thick accent, and weren't southerners usually overly friendly? Not that it really mattered. There were enough people that Kristian didn't dwell too long on how much small talk would be expected. "Truck tent, air mattress, and a space heater. And it's hard to say. If it warms up again, the snow could be gone in a week, but it might also snow again." He led them towards a large campsite display and turned down one of the aisles where there was a sizeable collection of tents. Camping being a summer activity, there was no shortage of styles and colors to choose from. "What route were you two planning on taking? This is our most popular truck tent. It fits two people, easy to set up and take down, and has five-and-a-half feet of headroom. If you guys were planning on hiking past the campgrounds, then I'd suggest a four season tent like this one. Fits three people, aluminum frame, and it stays dry even in heavy storms. Both of them come with a one year or two year warranty. Ah, and this is also quite popular among the locals. Very spacious, the awning is particularly useful in the snow or rain. Fiberglass and steel poles, and the fabric is very durable."
A bit further down the aisle were various tent accessories. "If you're looking for an air mattress, this one fits between the wheel wells of most pick ups, uses a hand pump, and very comfortable. I can also show you were we keep our other air mattresses. For the heater, did you have any prefence on power type? We carry electric, gas, and propane heaters. The electric heaters are especially popular right now, so I can't guarantee the selection. Do you need thermal sleeping bags or pads?" Even as someone who enjoyed some winter camping, Kristian had a hard time seeing this blizzard as a ripe opportunity to rough it. But, to each their own, and it wasn't his place to judge others on their leisure preferences. Still, they didn't come off as the outdoorsy type to him. They didn't look like backpackers, and with the woman's apparent injury, one would think home would be a better place to recuperate.
