The weather was warming up, and - at least with much pressing from his uncle - Aidan had finally decided to take on the idea of a ride out. Marj snorted, calmly walking, ignoring the Australian Shepherd who - with his harness and vest off that would have indicated he was working - was racing eagerly through the long grass, running and bouncing tail wagging eagerly.
Aidan himself turned about, checking around him. He was certain that no one was around, even if he could hear hoofbeats, he couldn't see anyone, and the plains were open enough that he could see for long enough. The brown and white mare gave another snort, head lowered, ears relaxed down for all intents and purposes looking like she was falling asleep.
Thor barked eagerly, bounding back over to stay closer to Aidan and Marj, looking up at them both tongue lolled out in contentment, both of them ignoring the clouds in the distance, partially obscuring the rockies. Aidan shifted in his saddle again glancing around once more, he was certain hoof beats were there now, and he could see a smudge now. Could be nothing, could be a person.
After Dakota finished all her chores for the day, except for cooking dinner and cleaning up after dinner, both of which it was several hours too early to do, she grabbed her stable bag, and her bus pass, went to the bus stop, and waited for the bus to come so she could get on and ride to the stables.
Once at the stables, she brought her gelding in from the pasture, gave him a good groom, checked the time on her watch, was glad to see that they had time for a good length trail ride before she had to head home to start dinner, tacked up Flash, mounted, and headed out onto the trails. She had not gone trail riding since the move, so she did not know any of the trails here yet, and this would be an adventure. She wished she had her mother with her, as she had never allowed her daughter to go on trails that she had not gone on with her first, but Dakota had felt so tired down since she went to live with her father, and she knew that her mother would not want it that way.
After Dakota and Flash had been out for a little while, during which Dakota had been paying close attention to where they had gone so far, they heard a bark. Dakota halted Flash, and looked in the direction where Flash’s ears had just moved.

Aidan stood slightly in Marj's stirrups, the tricoloured mare stood placidly as her rider looked around, before he shrugged. "Can't see anyone clearly," he muttered, nudging her on into a trot, starting to work on a large turn as they neared a stand of trees. The wind made the mix of pine and aspen tremble and stir, a soft whispered caress, carrying the promise of the spring that was coming.
Marj gave a soft snort even as she continued moving forward, ignoring the australian shepherds bouncing through the grass, tail wagging eager to explore and bounce and race ahead, doubling back to come back to the cob.
Dakota was sure had heard a dog bark, even though she could not see one in her line of vision. She normally tried to avoid other people, but she liked dogs, and she wanted to see the dog.
Dakota turned her horse in the direction that she had heard the bark. They trotted in that direction, and then halted when she saw the dog wondering around. They watched the dog running around, and clearly enjoying himself, and eventually turning around and going to a horse and human, who she guessed was his human, or hers she was not sure if that dog was a boy or a girl.

Aidan had glanced over, just noticing the other person on horse, and out of 'this is the polite thing to do' he called Thor in to heel, before sending him to bound away on Marj's other side, making sure his mare was between his dog and the other horse and rider. He'd never seen either of them - which wasn't hard when he tended to hermit himself - and so he didn't want Thor to spook the other horse. Marj was used to the australian shepherd and his goofy antics, and he reminded himself to focus on his dog. Because he wasn't sure he wanted to interact with the person. That would require him having to remember how to act normal, and try to not misread the cues.
Easily the tricoloured mare stretched her neck out, giving a soft snort shaking her head and neck again, utilising a very lazy trot but Aidan was fine with that. He'd got every plan of riding her in the ring later on, this was just a ride to... ride. And give Thor exercise.
Dakota was saddened, when the man called his dog over and had him go onto the other side of him and his horse. She suspected that the man did not want his dog to bother her, but she was not bothered by him at all. They started trotting away, but at a slow jog trot.
"He wasn't bothering me, Sir," she called out, wondering if he would even hear her, although she knew that he knew she was there, and then wondered if that had been rude. It now occurred to her that maybe the dog was potentially harmful, even though he looked completely harmless.

Aidan hadn't quite heard Dakota, and having heard something had merely assumed that she was thanking him. After all not every horse was used to dogs. Marj again gave a slight snort, shaking out her mane slowing back to a walk out of laziness, not really wanting to move at a trot. With another snort though she broke back into the lazy trot, head lowered, neck stretched out, looking for all intents and purposes like she was falling asleep moving still. Thor for his part was happy enough to bound along next to the horse and his owner now he'd been called close, blue eyes focused up waiting to be released from heel.
