Welcome to Choteau, Montana, in 2018. What was once only a small city focused on fossils, has now started to turn into an equestrian mecca. Everyone still knows everyone, so the question remains, what will you become?

Aidan hadn't any time in the ring booked until later, and truthfully he had no need to even be here yet. However here, which was one of the stalls. In particular, it was Marj's stall, the bay and white mare ignoring his presence totally, unbothered by the fact that there was a australian shepherd, or a human present. Her only move was to move over to start to nuzzle at his hair snorting softly.
Aidan smiled a bit at that glancing up from the book he was reading to gently reach up and scratch her cheek. "Hey girl, don't worry not riding you yet," he murmured quietly.

Even though he was in the States now, and only had three horses to keep in tip-top shape ready for when the Eventing season would kick off again, that didn't mean his days were empty. Between keeping an eye on the farm, his three horses and the numerous people around every day, there was quite enough to keep him busy. Not that he did the mucking out anymore; the benefits of being the boss, he supposed, but he had no problems helping out with other day to day stuff, such as feeding, watering, taking them to and back from the pastures and whatnot. Besides, much as he disliked it, there was an administrative side to things as well.
Frankly, he was very glad that he could take a break from paperwork when Woffle started to whine. The Dalmatian was a bit stubborn at times, and had a way of reminding Frederick when he had to, well, mostly eat and drink and check his blood sugar. It was also a delightful excuse to step out and get some fresh air, too - the dog had her needs, too. And really, he didn't much mind. The landscape was beautiful, the farm was finally starting to feel like home to him, and there was something wholesome and soothing about it.
He wasn't the only one that seemed to think so; he'd seen Aidan around before. The kid had some form of autism (he hadn't wanted to pry; he always hated it when people wanted all the details about his own hearing loss, or the diabetes and its associated gadgets. As long as he knew what he needed to look out for, he was good, and so far Aidan hadn't actually done overly stupid or dangerous stuff, so he was good letting him just do as he pleased) but was generally pleasant enough to be around, if... Different. "Hello," Frederick spoke as he approached, not wanting to spook the kid. "Easy, Woffle," he instructed his own dog. Woffle was a bit excitable and generally happy when strangers were around, because she never got enough attention and certainly a kind stranger wouldn't mind petting her a little, right? Right?

Aidan raised his head as he realised that hello was probably aimed at him, Thor having pressed closer against his leg, head rested in his lap now. He adjusted his position enough to press his back into the corner of the stall he'd already sat himself in, half closing the book around a thumb, he'd been reading the hobbit, the other hand moving to stroke Thors head, as much for the comfort of him being there, reminding himself that this was fine and he was safe.
"I thought Marj might be lonely, and its not right that I only turn up when I'm going to saddle up and ride her or feed her," he stated quietly, ignoring the hello totally. "I like spending time with her, she's nice," he added on with a smile, his gaze focused more on Thor, or Marj, or the haynet, or even Woffle, anything other than the person he was talking to.
Thor had glanced over at the dalmatian still saying put though in his position, pressing himself closer to Aidan. "What's your dog called?" came the sudden question, as he kept up his unconcious stroking of Thors head, soothing himself with the repetitive action.

Frederick didn't scoff; what he'd seen of the pinto mare so far, she wasn't exactly the picture of polite manners and kindness, but to each their own, and she seemed to be supremely unconcerned by the 'interlopers' in her stall at the moment. That in itself might be what appealed to Aidan; really, who was he to judge? Besides, Vita wasn't exactly the picture of perfection either. She didn't lack in talent, but she did lack in pretty much everything else. And frankly, the sentiment was one he couldn't disagree with. While he was less hands-on with his horses here, where they didn't spend all that much time in their stalls, during the season he hand-walked and hand-grazed them quite a bit, hacking out or taking them to nearby racetracks for a good gallop to keep them from being bored and overworked. A good bond with your horse went a long way, and part of that was making them realize you weren't only there when they needed to work.
He looked down at Woffle for a moment, who still seemed rather intensely focused on Aidan's dog. With a faint smile he dropped a hand to her head, stroking it for a moment to distract her. "She's Woffles the Second," he told the boy, smiling a little. The name was a continuation of his first dog, a mutt with Dalmatian-like spots, who had barked when he had first seen her and, not quite adept at the English language yet, had called her 'woffle' because that was what she was telling him, wasn't she? When he'd seen this incarnation of Woffle he had remembered the name and the fond feelings he had had for his first dog, and decided to make this Woffle her successor. And really, he hadn't regretted it since he'd adopted her. Occasionally she was a bit of a handful, but he was quite fond of the company and she had a way of making him live just a little bit healthier, and that was never bad. "Your dog is Thor, right?"

"Can I say hello to Woffles the second?" he asked with a happy smile. He was more interested in the other dog, not out of any rudeness, but because dogs - rather like horses - rarely judged. He was also aware though that the whole idea of just stroking anothers dog - especially if it was a possible working dog - was very rude, and not done. And he didn't like it when people tried to pet Thor or distract him when he was working, so. Fair turn about. He didn't like it so don't do it to others.
He nodded at the second question. "Yes, this is Thor. He's an Australian Shepherd, I taught him the basics of what I needed him to do myself, he's just had a lot of extra training and refinement to get all his official certifications," he smiled happily at that, because it was something he was still proud about. "I got him from a rescue, or well my mum and dad did, but he sorta became my dog because he bonded to me," he added on still stroking Thor.
He glanced up at Frederick, very briefly before he dropped his gaze again, letting it dart over his surroundings, observing them once more. He could hear his uncle scolding him for the 100th time to 'look at me when I'm talking to you' and he suddenly blurted "I don't mean to be rude by not looking at you, I'm just more comfortable looking at everything else... it's less threatening"

Perhaps it was a little strange, he supposed, the way the kid didn't quiet meet his eyes and was more interested in the dogs than he was in Frederick, but really, he could understand the appeal of animals over people. In the end, they were far less confusing, and had far less of a penchant of... Twisting facts or saying one thing while meaning another. That didn't mean it didn't feel a little awkward though, especially given that while eye contact wasn't necessarily something he did a lot, he did tend to watch peope quite closely, for the simple fact that he often used just a bit of lip-reading to supplement potential gaps in his understanding of what was said.
It took only a gesture to release Woffle from the way he was almost glued to Frederick's side. The Dalmatian wagged his tail quite ferociously, but kept the rest of his body language quite open as he approached the kid, because with the way Aidan was sitting, it was hard to call him anything else than a kid.
"He's quite a beauty" Frederick agreed, looking at the Australian Shepherd. They always had this... Fluffy and cute appearance, even if he was pretty aware not all of them were quite that kind-hearted. They were working dogs, after all, and those had a way of getting destructive if they didn't have an outlet for all that energy. Then again, so could Woffle if he didn't do enough with her.
"It's okay," he told the kid. "I was told," he added for full disclosure. It hadn't included much about Aidan, just enough that he was aware the boy had some... Quirks he neededn't worry about overmuch.
I was your foundation

Aidan had relaxed without even realising it at the confirmation that Frederick had been warned about some of his...quirks. He'd also lit up as Woffles had come over to him, Thor wagging his tail at the other dog, as Aidan had moved to reach to stroke his shoulder first. Only Thor got him stroking his head at first contact, and that was more because he knew Thor knew to expect it.
"Dogs are easy to understand, they don't over complicate things, and rather like horses ... they don't tend to hold onto grudges over much, they react to simple things to understand, their needs, and pressure and reward," he stated, more to himself than anything else. "Make the behaviour you want them to do easy, and providing some kind of reward or need fulfilment and it becomes easy to get them to work for you..." he paused to glance up at Frederick.
"Almost wish there were more equestrian events that a dog could compete alongside, besides the fun ones that is," he added on giving a slight sigh. "But not every horse likes dogs, Marj is used to them, and Thor knows to stay away from hooves, and his job is to follow not herd,"
