This was something that he hadn't done in ages. Literally. Well, years anyway. The park was beautiful and he managed to pull together some art supplies from the shops around town. While it wasn't much; the brushes, paint, and canvas were cheap, it was something. Art had, at one point, been a part of his life. Something that he loved. More than once, in that other life, he had been told he had talent to go somewhere with it. These days, he wasn't so sure.
Kacey propped up the canvas, on a tree and sat upon the ground. Certainly in the event that he had lost all of his talent, buying an easel was an unnecessary expense. Besides, he wasn't uncomfortable either. The sun was warm, the grass was comfortable and as weird as he looked, he was rather happy. With the lack of any subject before him, he just painted what came to mind. Something very similar to the park before him. It was a start anyway. Rome wasn't built in a day and he had a lot of rust to work out of.
A lot of rust. Kacey dipped a brush in the water to clean it before dabbing it dry with a piece of tissue, studying his work thoughtfully. It wasn't his best work, even if it wasn't quite done yet but at least it looked like something. Much better than just throwing paint on a canvas and calling it art like some people. And it was relaxing with the birds chipping and general comfort.
He had missed this, even if the painting did come out some ugly hot mess it was a nice form of escapism. Something to do just for fun and just for him. Without the help of Colin the cat too. Although what that cat did was hardly help. If Kacey didn't know any better, he would have thought the cat to be getting into quite a few more things than he should have.
Hearing a voice somewhere behind him, he turned to look, tearing himself from his thoughts. "Excuse me? I didn't hear you." Maybe they weren't talking to him but for the moment he was going to just assume that they were.

Michael, if anything, was curious. He'd got a rare day off and was just exploring the city, trying to see a bit more about the place. Besides the horses. The fact he got to care for them was something he found relaxing, not that he'd ever mention that. So it was, with a sandwich in hand, and a bottle of dr pepper shoved in his pocket he was exploring the park, enjoying the warmth of the sun.
Then he'd happened upon an unusual sight. Someone sat.... painting? So while it was probably rude he'd meandered over to watch. Then he'd ended up blurting out "What are you painting?"

Kacey had nothing against people asking questions. At least where painting was concerned. After all, he surely looked rather silly the way he was sat. Normal people didn't quite go about things the way he did but by all appearances he wasn't normal. Plus there was the simple fact that he didn't want to throw good money away so when someone eventually did question him - it wasn't a surprise.
"It's a messy version of a park." He replied. That was near enough to the truth anyway. While it was better than he had expected considering the length of time in between his last painting, it was hardly something he wanted to hang on his wall or even keep. It was a mess and for some reason the more paint he added the less he liked it.
Disgusted, he dropped his paint brush in the nearby container of water and frowned at his so-called art. He really had lost all ability but maybe there was a chance that he was being too hard on himself. Kacey didn't get up but he did at least look at the questioner. Bit of a funny angle to do so but he wasn't done wasting canvas quite yet. "Do you paint?" Honestly he had to hope the gentleman didn't. The last thing he needed was someone really knowing what a load of crap what he had painted really was.

Michael gave a nod at the first comment. "It looks good.... like really good.... better then I could do. I'd just be able to ... draw a stick figure..." he looked sheepish. He didn't have the patience - or at least he didn't think he had the patience to sit and do anything like that. "I've...never really tried. Just don't think I'd be much good y'know? I'm someone who likes to try and puzzle out the big questions... or....well... just do something. Don't do sittin' still well," he sighed. "'Sides, I couldn't even finish highschool - got kicked out for doin a science experiment, why would I be able to sit and do something none destructive"
Which just reminded him of the fact that all his life had been one big fuck up, and he stuck his hands in his pocket as he scowled at nothing. He'd fucked up everything, and fucked up everyones life to ever come into contact with him. He sometimes questioned just as to what made him even -think- that anything would be different now.

Kacey was pretty sure the guy was just being nice. After all, it looked like shit. Although, maybe to someone who couldn't draw a stick figure it was a nice piece. Still, he couldn't help but doubt that. Plus anyone could draw a stick figure. It was everything after that, that seemed to go to hell. For most people anyway. He personally, had been lucky in the fact that he could draw. Had a natural ability some would say and more than likely had he not fucked up and given Jason Applegate a sudden end - he would have attended art school. It was too late for that now.
Though the stranger did seem a bit chatty. That was normal enough in a small town. Typically it was down to people fishing for some information to use as gossip. Like the group of old ladies that had a list of questions prepared for him (or so it felt like) when they discovered him in the local grocery store. At least, all they got away with was the fact that he was new, was hoping to get a job with horses and had a cat. That was more than they needed to know anyway but it was enough to get them off his back.
With the chatty man still there, Kacey gave one final look to his ugly piece of work and got to his feet. He did prefer speaking to people eye to eye - or thereabouts. The doctor he had seen for a while when he was inside had pin pointed exactly why but that misadventure and trauma was nothing that he was willing to give out to a friend let alone a complete stranger. Hell, he hadn't even told his sister and she visited him twice a month.
"The GED isn't hard." Kacey remarked. Okay, maybe the guy knew that already and just didn't care to go through it. Not everyone wanted proof they had that base education. He, on the other hand, did. Perhaps that was why he had gotten out as soon as he did. "But I get it. Classes can be so boring." From what he could truly remember anyway. He had spent quite a few days outside of those classes, avoiding them. Science not being a strong suit either.
With that he turned to toss the painting he had been working on in the nearby trashcan, the paint and brushes following close behind. For now he was done with art. At least, until he could afford proper paint. Craft grade was hardly going to cut it. As if throwing away a painting was normal, he turned back to the gentleman and offered his hand. "I'm Kacey Morris, by the way." It seemed only fair to introduce himself. It was a small town. Odds were they'd see each other again even if they weren't trying. "Have you lived here long?"

Michael shrugged "I've not idea how easy or hard it is, got kicked out of school for doin' a science experiment," he chose to not go into the fact that he'd blown a hole in the roof of the science lab. That was probably inadvisable. He gave a slight 'noise' at the mention of Kaceys name, taking his hand and shaking it, firmly. "Michael Stark, I'm relatively new here," he stated easily, trying to avoid mentioning that he was on parole.
He glanced at his watch though, checking the time. "So what brought you here? I mean its middle of no where, kinda dead end, right?" he added on, trying to keep attention away from himself.

Kacey had no doubt there was more to the science experiment story than met the eye but he didn't press. It wasn't his business plain and simple. People could do what they wanted with their spare time. At least, he could say he hadn't been expelled. Not that being in jail, and later prison, at the time sounded a whole lot better.
"Nice to meet you." He replied. That was beginning to feel like something of a stock answer but how else was a person supposed to reply? Was there even a handbook out there on such details? Maybe he was being too polite but it was better than not. It was better than, pissing someone off.
He didn't quite follow the question, however. At first he answered a "Well, I haven't painted in --" before stopping and realising that odds were that the gent was on about something broader than ugly paintings done by no talent hacks. "It came up on a Google search. I'm from a small town in Colorado. This isn't that much different. Nice views." Now if only he hadn't lost every bit of talent, perhaps he could get some of those views on canvas.
Kacey was tempted to ask a similar question to this Michael but he thought better of it. Somehow or another, he figured the question wouldn't go over well. Maybe that was just a bad sense of judgment on his part but he was going with it. "Weather's not half bad." Okay, so maybe the talking about the weather was stupid but nothing else was coming to mind. At least no questions that you asked a complete stranger so he was going to just have to work with what he had. And that wasn't much.

"Your better suited to this town then me - originally from New York.... unwanted kid after mum got knocked up, and well she had me," he gave a slight shrug and a sigh. "So I was constantly being pushed to one side and being the person in the shadows keeping out of the way," which was admittedly more than he'd intended to say originally but either way. He'd started speaking about it, now he just had to deal with the consequences. "Weren't very good at not having attention on me though... so I somewhat started to try and find ways to get attention," and he was hoping he could leave it at that.
He glanced up at the weather. "Yeh, weathers decent. Sunny, bit better then rain, and at least its starting to warm up..." he gave a shrug. "C...could you... maybe teach me how to paint? Cause well.... you do a heck of a lot better then me... but I don't have patience... I'm sorry, I get a bit frustrated when things turn out bad or don't go how I want," he added on with a sigh.
He shifted looking over at him curiously. "I'm sure that you'll see why your so good an artist to me, and apparently I need a hobby or something to do or else I'll get destructive and I really don't want to face them consequences again"

It seemed odd for someone to really talk about their past with a complete stranger but Kacey didn't remark upon it. Maybe the guy was going through a rough patch and just needed someone to stop and listen to him. That was nothing that Kacey was going to push away. Not with the depression he had suffered through before. Without Hugo's friendly ear, well, he shuttered to think what might have happened.
So he nodded now and again. For what it was worth, he could understand what this guy felt. "My mom wasn't around much either." Kacey voiced half that thought. Although, he now understood why she was away like she was, then as a child and a renegade teen, he hadn't understood more than her abandonment. It had sent him off the rails faster than he wanted to admit.
He couldn't stop his eyebrow from raising at the suggestion though. Glancing to the canvas still in the bin, he couldn't understand why someone would ask the likes of him. He'd lost his talent. He was horrible. He sucked. Rubbing at the back of his neck, he answered in a shaky. "Well... I guess..." While he wasn't sure if he could even teach, maybe it would be good for a laugh, an interest. Who knew, maybe he'd be decent at it and could have a class on the side. Although he was getting ahead of himself.
"I guess, you could take that stuff, if you want something to start with." Kacey gave a motion to the bin. The art supplies, after all, were usable. He just needed better. He needed those high grade brushes and paints but that took money and that was sorely lacking. "You don't have to but free is free." Considering when he had been working at a restaurant before the move and that equaled various leftovers no one stopped him from taking - he had learned not to be picky. At least with that. Apparently art was a whole other matter.
He mustered up a smile. "I could be a horrible teacher though, fair warning."

[attr="class","box1"]That brought a very slight smile to Michael's face as he glanced over towards the bin where the art supplies had been thrown into almost hesitating. Because he wasn't usedto someone actually willing to offer him something like that. "You're sure? You don't want anything?" he added on looking over at him again hesitantly.
Slowly though he moved to retrieve the supplies looking over at him again as he came back over. He had no plans to be picky after all, because he wasn't used to the idea of actually being offered anything. At least not for free. "What's Colorado like?" he suddenly asked randomly, his desire for knowledge and knowing about the world that he didn't know about coming through strong all of a sudden. Which was the only reason he'd not fallen into his usual surly don't care for people mindset. That and he'd not been pushed away yet [newclass=.box1]margin:0px auto; width:300px; height:425px; background: transparent; overflow:auto; padding:8px;[/newclass] [newclass=.box1::-webkit-scrollbar]width:5px;[/newclass] [newclass=.box1::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background: #772929;[/newclass]

Kacey couldn't help but shrug. "I can't stand the feel of that paint. If you want it, by all means." It was perhaps a little foolish to spend money on lower grade supplies and then find out that working with them was like nails on a chalkboard. However, most people weren't him. While he didn't exactly have the kind of money to throw $30 down the drain, but if it didn't work, it didn't work. He'd just have to save a little back from his paycheck and go buy the expensive stuff like he used to work with. What a shame that his mother had chucked everything of his out the day after he got arrested. Thankfully, Flick had the foresight, to save all the photos of him. At least he could claim he still had his baby photos.
What mattered at the moment though, was the simple fact and idea that Michael could use what he had wasted money on. Honestly, Kacey could never abide by waste in the first place. Knowing that it wasn't going to end up in a landfill was something. Better than nothing anyway. He'd take it. Although the idea of teaching someone to paint was a little on the scary side.
That he had never attempted before but there was a first for everything and Michael didn't seem all that put off by his warning. Which was either just being foolish or downright stubborn. Somehow Kacey couldn't help but figure it was more the latter than the former on that.
The question about home earned another shrug. Although it wasn't really his home anymore. He had left it and more than likely for good and for good reason. Flick could say what she wanted but it hadn't made him change his mind. She wasn't the one with the bad reputation. She was the victim everyone accepted. That was completely different. "It's a lot like this." In many ways it was. "It was just a tourist town in the mountains instead. Still small, still boring." Maybe it had just been boring to his teenage self but nothing ever seemed to happen. Well, until he did what he did. That sure livened the place up but he wasn't about to repeat that every time things got too quiet.
"Would you like to meet at my place or yours for lessons?" It was a subject change but preferred. While Kacey wasn't quite homesick, he didn't want to think too much either. Or worse say something that he'd later regret.

[attr="class","box1"]Michael gave an easy smile as he stashed the paints away, biting his lip slightly in hesitation at the new question. Because he really didn't want to intrude but in the same breath he didn't want it to be too obvious to anyone else he was technically on parole and his house would mean he'd have to do more work to clear it first or some bullshit. [break][break] "While you're welcome to come round mine I live on corner meadow farm so it could be somewhat awkward, I mean with the horses and all, so if it's nothing too awkward could I come to yours?"
